Rowland Hussey Macy opened a dry goods store called Macy's in bustling Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1851. That store
failed, but Macy moved to New York and opened R.H. Macy Dry Goods on Sixth Avenue. Of course, now Macy's is a New York
institution, and Haverhill is, well, still north of Boston.

The star has been part of Macy's logo since the 1850's, and comes from a tattoo R.H. Macy got during his time on a Nantucket
whaler. Coincidentally (or not) Isador Strauss, who bought R.H. Macy & Co. in 1895, went down with the White Star liner Titanic in 1912.
