This is mortis and tenon construction and is used throughout Kam woodwork. The brightly colored pieces are the pegs that hold the tenon in place. For the drum tower, unlike pegs that are finished flat with the surface, these traditional pegs are made so that they become decorative which adds to the style of the construction.
