With her baby on her back, rice preparations balanced across her sholders and a young son marching ahead, this woman is giving glutinous rice for the new drum tower celebration. In the distance a wind rain bridge can be seen.
The wind rain bridge plays a very important role in Kam culture as it is the entrance to the village and offers protection. The wind rain bridge is a connection to the ancestors and the placement of the bridge requires great thought. This is Feng Shui. The bridge also keeps the fortune of the village from flowing away and maintains fortune in the community. Often couples meet and will talk while sitting in the wind rain bridge and it is considered a good place to socializing and courtship. In Gaoxiu there is a wind rain bridge at two areas with one to the north of the village and the other to the south. Often the entrance to the wind rain bridge is not straight through but on the side at one end going straight out the other end.
Many wind rain bridges were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, severing the roots of the community.
