It is clearly seen on this picture that a fair amount of lubricant had to be used in order to minimize wear and noise. When the all-steel wheels were replaced, first with nylon tires and later an all-nylon design, this must have been a great relief.
Furthermore, the lubricant on the cable was also important to allow the wire to move reasonably freely at each pylon
