This Marker Tells of Great History Of The Willcox Family

Left to Right: Jeanne Soar, Idell Gilliard, and Charles Batchelor enjoyed the
history marker which tells the story of the Willcoxes. The Willcoxes had a
paper mill in Pennsylvania in the early 1700's and became friends with
Benjamin Franklin. In fact, the families traded with each other as Franklin
needed their paper for his print shop and they needed items from his
general store. He also furnished them with rags for papermaking. Some of
the Willcoxes later came to North Carolina and then on to Georgia. General
Mark WIllcox had his military headquarters at Jacksonville, Ga., and his son,
John Coffee Willcox, lived in Jacksonville, Ga. John Coffee Willcox married
Elizabeth Swain, daughter of Thomas Swain, who gave the land for the
original church (church in background is on the same location).
