This type of log cabin for lodging of traveling tourists could be found in many towns in Georgia around the 1930's and 40's. They served as Jacksonville's motor lodge, a forerunner of today's motel. Though long ago abandoned for their original purpose their very existence testifies to their sturdy construction. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter also had a store on the site which included their home. From time to time Mr. Carpenter also served as the town marshal.
