_MG_2044 Ant moving larva

These little guys move so fast that I couldn't get enough depth of field at ISO 400 to get them all in focus, so I decided to use my 580ex flash with the Gary Fong Lightsphere and a smaller f stop. It worked!

Canon EOS 350D
1/200s f/11.0 at 90.0mm iso400 with Flash full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Cette fourmi rouge est surprise en pleine action, c'est une macro très réussie.

Aren't those the ones that bite so hard? We have some nesting in an outdoor bubbler and every time I use it the the water drives them out and they come screaming out, each carrying an egg! Great shot!

every time i shoot macros (unless its very bright out) i use f11 or f16, 1/250 sec or so, iso 200, and the built-in flash and I get amazing results

Using the flash with manual settings (and E-TTL) allowed me to close down my aperture and raise the shutter speed so I had a good chance of stopping the action and getting the ant in better focus.
