The snake is a Santa Cruz Garter Snake, Thamnophus atratus. Formerly this snake was considered to be a subspecies of
the Western Aquatic Garter Snake, Thamnophus couchii. Based on DNA evidence it is now treated as a separate species.
The salamander has been identified by Utah State herpetologists as a Rough-skinned Newt, Taricha torosa;
however, in some aspects it more resembles a California Newt, T. torosa. The coloration around the eye suggests
Rough-skinned, but this may not be definitive; the extent to which the eyes protrude suggests California.
