Ray lived in Stehekin Valley his whole life and worked guiding hunters in fall and families in the summer as a horse packer into the high Cascades which were his back yard. Ray died in a horse packing accident late in life after a horse rolled over him after his pack string tangled. Ray and his family were featured in a National Geographic Book in late 70's " Pioneers Of America"
