I was USAF assigned to the 11th ACR to provide weather support for ground & flight operations, 91 - 93. What a gravy assignment that was (imagine being one of a dozen Air Force dudes assigned to an Army post). Our weather shop was upstairs in the fire station right next door to the control tower. Notice of the closure came about 4 months after I rotated back to the states.

Was there from 1976-1987 with Air Troop 11th A.C.R. Did some staff duty N.C.O. on that tower. When to visit a couple of times when I went to visit my German friends. Yes. Sad to see it in that condition but at least it's still standing tall. A lot of good memories spent there. Beautiful city.

I was an avionics mechanic with Air Troop 79-80 I return there some years later, this picture reminds me of that. Pfc B.E Lehman I was also stationed at Downs Barracks and I remember that walk up and down the hill through the "Gypsy" camp too get to the airfield Air Field. Guard duty was an adventure as well! Overall I have a lot of good memories.
David Edward Kale 30-Sep-2021 17:37
Civilian - My Dad, Darold Kale was a Blackhawk pilot stationed there from 89-92. I graduated from the Hight School on base. Only 22 kids in my class! I worked at the 511th MI Co as a clerk for a summer hire job in 1990. I hope to return to the area some day and show it to my family!

I was company clerk for Attack Helicopter Troop 11th ACR 76 - 78. Major Hamburger commanding Officer, XO Captain Huff from Texas and Top Sgt, Albert Boxie. These 3 were impressive individuals and an honor to serve under.

Squadron commander a Colonel who loved PT. During training he led from the front, hard not to admire. tfmahony@cox.net

I was with PFC B.E. Lehman. Hey Lefty!! It was as he said back in 1977. Over all I would say that duty was always a challenge. Always muddy and dark.If you had no car you had to walk to air field. Kept me trim. This is the first chance to say a few words. Would like to see our company photo of 1977 if possible. Any ideas? Thanks. Bruce Nelson. June 77-Dec 79

Had a lot of good times there in 1980 and 1981 as an Air Force Weather observer.

Was in the 511th from oct 92 until deactivated in 93. Still remember when they used to run the air assault school on the airfield. My roommate was cadre for it.

So sad to see it looking like this. I was there in 1974. Beautiful country...our country could take some lessons on upkeep of countryside.

Does anyone remember the building with the bank and the army post office? That's where I worked in 82 - 83. 61st Postal Detachment, APO NY 09146. Some of the pilots had pretty wives working in the bank, the PX, etc. I had great duty. Just keep the mail moving and nobody bothered us.
Pfc B.E Lehman 27-Jun-2016 20:16
I was stationed at Downs Barracks from Jun 77 to Dec 79. Farrp section, AHT, C&C Sqdrn 11th ACR. Air Field was a mud hole then, nothing but a make-shift "building" for a motorpool and shelled out buses for the ammo & pol offices behind the hanger. Tower and ops bldng were considered unsafe and condemed, but that was good enough for our group because we were considered "cannon fodder". Useless to Command and only good for an Article 15 every time you turned around for "failure to repair" just for muddy boots or uniform. Barracks were located on the kaserne then, had to walk down the hill through the "Gypsy" camp too get to the airfield. Air Field was considered "combat conditions" 24/7/365. Guard duty on the Field was a joke' . We were given pop-up flares, m-16 and no ammo. thanks to the Red Brigades we were finally issued 5 rounds of ammo, but threatened with court marshall if we ever used it. Not great duty, even if I was only 17 at the time.

I was in the HHT POL Platoon 84 to 85, plenty of field duty, Summer and Winter Reforgers, Graf, training in Kiel, guard duty and alerts. The time went quickly.

Damn the airfield and the entire base has realy been let go sence I left in 1993. It's truly sad to see such a place that holds so many great memories be in the condition that it is today. It doesn't even look like the barracks are there any more, so I honestly doubt the stinger hooch is. Alot of great time, served with alot of great men, and made alot of awsome friends!!
Guest 17-Jul-2010 15:51
Damn Ray !!! good times indeed !!! it's Jim Rutland and served with you during that same time, We used to work in that hanger......ended up meeting my future wife in Fulda then before returning back to the States, Did another hitch from 88-91 farther South in Ansbach under 1st Armor Divison, the frau and I got married 1990 before I deployed to Desert storm, We used to come back and visit Downs/Sickels all the time, and still have family in the area - It's all gone now and local ecomomy is in the crapper from what they tell us......Me and the Frau still married after 20 years !!!

It's amazing they left the tower standing at all. As sad as it looks thanks for taking the pic's.
I was the hht regimental flight surgeon assistant. I was a medic there from 1985-87. I had both a jeep and flew out of Sickels with Major Pittman. Great memories. Thanks again.
S Nichols 04-Dec-2009 03:36
I was assigned to the S-1 Shop as the Squadron Legal Specialist (SP5) of the Combat Aviation Squadron (CAS) when I first arrived in Fulda in 1984. Sickels Army Air Field was a very modern airfield. The 511th Military Intelligence Company was co-located on the base as was the barracks for the CAS. I was eventually assigned to the U.S. Army Trial Defense Service and moved to its offices in the Karmann House located on Haimbacher Strasse in Fulda, Germany. I use to drive to airfield every day to check my mail. Sorry to see it in such sad shape.

I was in hht regt from 87 - 90. I use to fly out on col abrams chopper to deliver comsec to troops in hoenfels and graff. Was a top notch airfield in its day. Sad to see it in this condition.

Was a controller in that tower. Must say, the krauts haven't kept the place up. What a shame. She was the most advanced tower the Army had in Europe.
