Horine Road begs to be driven fast. It is one sweeping turn after another with very little traffic and the feeling of being out in the middle of nowhere.
Just over five years ago, two high school students were on their way to school for the last graduation rehearsal. Running late, they were going much faster than even the road begged for - and the girl, a passenger, died. Friends put the marker up within 48 hours. More importantly, the state highway people put up a barrier to prevent the same type of thing from happening again.
Her marker was kept up, tended to carefully, for a year and then increasingly less so. Today was its last day. I took this shot mid-afternoon. No one was around to see me do it. But by odd coincidence, on my way home, passing the spot again, the marker was gone.
