86th Infantry Division:
The Blackhawk Division.
The 86th Division was activated as a component of the Army of
the United States on December 15th, 1942, with Headquarters
at Camp Howze, Texas. A small detachment of the 86th was involved
in the 1942 Louisiana maneuvers, and the entire unit participated
in the November 1943 Louisiana maneuvers. After receiving
intensive training in amphibious operations (it was thought
that the Division would be sent to the Pacific) in California,
the 86th embarked in February of 1945 for the European Theater.
The shoulder patch worn by the 86th Division is based on a
WW I design that was approved by the AEF on November 26th,
1918. The letters "BH" in the center of the patch as well as
the large black hawk suggest the Division's nickname.
