Golden Pheasant - male

Scientific name: Chrysolophus pictus
Order: Galliformes
Family: Phasianidae

Also called Chinese Pheasant

The Golden Pheasant is a gamebird native to forests in mountainous areas of western China, but feral populations have been established in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.

They feed on the ground on grain, leaves, berries, grubs, seeds and invertebrates, but roost in trees at night. Whilst they can fly, they prefer to run: but if startled they can suddenly burst upwards at great speed, with a distinctive wing sound. Although they can fly in short bursts they are quite clumsy in flight and spend most of their time on the ground.

YELLOW GOLDEN PHEASANT. My wife and I, walking through Waterloo Park early this evening, on the path between the lake and Perimeter Institute, saw an incredibly coloured bird, mostly brilliant yellow, on the ground, eating berries off the bushes and apparently not afraid of us. We observed it for several minutes, about 10 or 15 feet away. A quick search of the internet identified it as a yellow mutation of a Golden Pheasant, or a Yellow Golden Pheasant. No red on the breast, just brilliant, brilliant yellow.

Beautiful creature. How can this bird hide from predators? With those brilliant colors it looks like he would easily fit right in at the Burningman freakfest! ;)

We were driving around beatiful Hastings countryside when we spotted a Golden Pheasent today. I could not believe my eyes. I did not know this bird existed in England because I thought it was a tropical bird. Turel & Karen Sut

My husband and I were driving along Stanley Rd last week near the 10th line in Oro-Medonte (near Barrie, Ontario, Canada) and had to stop the car to let one of these birds cross the street. Thank-you for naming it - had no idea what it was before today.

Wow, I was out walking with my dog this morning and came across a Golden Pheasant. When I saw its' beautiful red breast I couldn't believe my eyes as I live in a very populated area of Toronto, Ontario Canada and there is nothing around except apartment buildings. When I got home I searched to find out what type of bird it was and now I know. Amazing!!!
