Heathrow Hotel

For the " Handles" Totally Informal Transglobal Challenge
more entries can be see in the forum here

::Part of my Thursday Challenge Collection::

This was one of my most interesting set ups, especially as I was now limited to using a mobile phone camera,
having had to abandon my DSLR when my car broke down on Monday

The equipment list for this shoot -

1 x Ian York (that's me)
4 x Hotel Bell boys
1 x Concierge
5 x angle poise lamps
1 x hotel Bathroom
1 x a kindly American lady from the room next door and her daughter
1 x Camera (generously loaned by the afore mentioned American lady)
1 x mobile phone – which turned out to be pretty poor in the end
2 x extension leads
1 x a great time

I knew the shot I wanted, I had already had a go in available daylight early in the morning using my mobile
I was therefore confident that the composition was possible. I just needed lots of light.

After a late session in the office I finally got back to the Hotel and
at 10:00pm last night I asked the concierge if I could borrow some desk lamps, and after I explained why
he sent up to my room a number of lamps, extensions leads, Bell boys and himself.

Whilst we were trying to set up the lighting, ( and were obviously making some fuss and noise,
the lady in the room next to me asked what we were trying to do
-six men,a couple of extension leads and 5 lamps in a bathroom does look strange
(….my hotel room door was open to the corridor, so it was easy to see in)

She then offered her little compact camera – a Canon PowerShot s230
it seemed to be identical to my Ixus V3 which is at home somewhere..
Anyway this was a god send in the circumstances

3.2 mpeg and manual override. A very simple cam, but I knew I could use it with all the light we now had.
I set it in manual, set the ISO to 50, set it up to underexpose by 1/3 stop,
turned off the flash, put it in Macro mode. Then played…..

The outcome is this, with some neat image to tidy it up – and has resulted in one of my most pleasing images.
Not bad for a camera 5 years old and smaller than a cigarette packet,
with a sensor about the size of my fingernail

I flush with laughter at the mere thought of all that commotion surrounding a little handle.

The story behind the shot is priceless, Ian. You've managed to create a memory for not only you and your viewers, but the hotel staff and a visiting American! They'll not soon forget you.

Michael Shpuntov28-Jun-2007 19:27
Just proves one more time it's not the camera, it's a dude on camera's other end, one who makes a picture.
Chris Thorpe28-Jun-2007 18:48
Sounds like quite a group effort....Nicely done!
Guest 28-Jun-2007 18:44

Laryl28-Jun-2007 17:38
wow that's dedication for ya! great story and I love the look on the photo. I've heard lighting is so important..wonder how many people would go to that length to pull in great light for a handle? but then it's the TITC :) great job
Guest 28-Jun-2007 17:30
You really came out with a gem even in such difficult situations. Are you sort of a McGyver?
Nicki Thurgar28-Jun-2007 16:30
Amazing how a simple dilemma can bring out the best in everyone, and you got a great shot too! But really... are we getting a tad bit obsessive about these challenges maybe....!! LOL! ;o)
Dr. Michael G. Mathews28-Jun-2007 15:56
I agree. The story alone is priceless. This shot should be a Visa ad ;-)
virginiacoastline28-Jun-2007 15:37

CIS28-Jun-2007 15:31
Terrific shot and a winning story!:o)
royalld28-Jun-2007 14:19
Marvelous shot.
This has to be the most elaborate set up for this challenge.
Didn't you leave out one item in your equipment list? .... gratuity for the stage hands :^)
Scott Browne28-Jun-2007 13:50
Well worth the effort! This turned out great.
Once again, you take a better shot on the road without your ideal equipment that most of us get with our DSLRs.
Tim van Woensel28-Jun-2007 12:48
Flush!

Guest 28-Jun-2007 09:10
Wonderful shot,Ian,once again proving it is the photographer, not the equipment, that produces great images. Now you are "flushed" with success, where are you and your film crew off to next?!!!
Ray :)28-Jun-2007 08:45
You needed four bell boys in your bedroom loo? I can understand why the American lady was confused!
Fong Lam28-Jun-2007 08:08

laine8228-Jun-2007 05:04
You forgot the cleaning lady who maintains the shine on the handle !!

Your story is hilarious, I am cracking up reading it LOL!
THe image is great, good enough for an advert for wc handles, but your story is priceless!
