Hawthorn and Castle

Duffus castle, Moray, Scotland.

One of my favourite but also most troublesome aspects of Duffus Castle is this one with the old hawthorn tree. The foreground is basically the car park and doesn't look terribly attractive but beneath a thick coating of rime and with the sun in position to backlight the frosted tree against the brooding bulk of Duffus castle kept slightly soft by choice of depth of field a sense of place is maintained and the picture seems to come alive.

Hi Zane I tend to agree with some of your points this particular picture isn't really intended to work at it's best by itself. Rather it is best considered within a presentaion of other images associated with the castle. There are quite a few other shots that support it dotted throughout my galleries that clearly show it in the context of a castle on a hill with not a lot else surrounding it. Rather than stitch which I admit having an adversity too, (rightly or wrongly I believe a photograph to be one image taken at one instant ot time, whatever the duration that instant might be), I often choose to use the central portion from my 6x7 camera and crop away. However going wider seemed to decrease the impact of the tree, here the castle works (for me) in juxtaposition and emphasis placed on that tree by relinquishing depth of field.
