The frolic architecture...
2 June 2006 (259)

Fovant, Salisbury, UK

On the downs above the village where I live are the Fovant Badges:
regimental badges carved into the turf to reveal the chalk that lies underneath.

Since being restored in 2002,
they've needed a lot of intensive maintenance;
and they're currently all being strimmed and weeded;
with two of the larger badges also being re-chalked with 80 tonnes of the stuff --
which has to be taken down the steep slope in tracked, powered barrows;
placed in the old chalk outlines, and then compacted.

Sadly, the map is just about invisible, and the grass has been allowed to grow back: as it's just too large (51m x 32m: which is just under half the area of a football pitch!) and expensive to restore. Seehttp://www.fovantbadges.com/his_det.htm for more detail...

I have enjoyed looking at the Fovant Badges. Can you still see the map of Australia?

This looks like something out of Dr Who. Neat shot...

Really like this strange, other-wordly photo. The composition is great - for a moment, it's hard to tell whether it's a flat surface we're loking down on, waking on almost to the horizon of blue sky, or if it's a mound blocking our way.

Thanks for the explanation, love the angle on this and that strong blue sky!
