But it was everywhere you looked
(especially in the swampy bits) in Oddford Vale;
and gave out great puffs of pollen or spores
if you touched it....

That's tsukushi in Japanese...a spore shoot of field horsetail. You pick them when tender, pull off the brown jagged rings on the sides, then fry them in oil, adding soy sauce, "mirin", sugar, and a dash of sesame oil for flavor.
