Sorry to hear of the engine problem! I've never heard of the Bighorn model---perhaps it is not sold in the States. We Yanks use different terminology for "lay-by." If the area had been designed as (or over the years had become) an informal parking lot, the term would be "turn-out" (because drivers could use the space to turn out of the flow of traffic). But if it had been built as a place for one or two vehicles to stop briefly (as in this photo), it would most likely be called a "wide shoulder"
