Today is Queens Day!
And queen Beatrix and her Royal Family are coming to our city to celebrate.
There`s a special story to Queens Day in The Netherlands.
It used to be the birthday of our current reighning queen.
But when our old queen Juliana retired in 1980 and her daughter Beatrix took over
the Dutch throne, Beatrix came up with a very special decision to honour her mother.
From then on Juliana`s birthday, April 30, was to be -forever- our national Queens Day,
instead of the birthday of the current queen or king. Of course Beatrix`s birthday is
January 31, which is not a great date for a national celebration, weatherwise...
Anyway, now our Queens Day is fixed on April 30.
Queens Day is going to be Kings Day in a few years, because after a line of queens (Emma,
Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix) we will have a king next: Willem-Alexander.
Queen Beatrix`s full name is Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard van Oranje-Nassau.
She`s from the `House of Orange` (Orange is an old territory in France the family used to own).
Orange is also the official colour of our Royal Family.
So if you`re Dutch and you support the queen you wear orange today.
I support the queen.
Happy Queens Day, Beatrix!
