A hat hangs on a peg on the wall of a room in the Centre Family Dwelling in Shaker Village of
Pleasant Hill, Ky., near Harrodsburg. Rooms in Shaker buildings all had walls lined with pegs
in wooden rails. The pegs were used for hanging chairs and other items, maintaining the
austerity and simplicity that characterized Shaker interior spaces. The Centre Family Dwelling
was built in the early 1800s. Many structures in the village, a National Historic Landmark, have
been restored and are used as an inn for lodging.
