Chaos

DC Water is replacing the lead pipes in our street (part of a citywide program) and offered homeowners replacement of the pipes leading to their houses free of charge. Although in the past we haven’t wanted to go through all disruption, we finally gave in and signed up for the replacement since they were actually working on our block. They dug up our garden but then said we have a galvanized pipe leading to the house rather than lead, so it wasn’t urgent and that they’d come back later (and do it all over again). I was relieved but hope our crape myrtle survives the excavation, although I have my doubts.

Even the police got into the doggy spirit, posted earlier:

Seems they should just replace it now since they've already dug up the yard!!

Yes, this is chaos for you, but I'm worried about your neighbor.
If he has to remove his skeletons, etc., he might have a mental breakdown.

It looks awful and messy. I hope the tree makes out ok.

Keeping my fingers crossed for your tree!

Wow, chaotic indeed and very disruptive to the garden. We are having similar work done (by the city, whether we want it or not!) sometime this year. Not looking forward to it. This shows me a taste of what to expect!

Not the most aesthetic landscaping! Good luck with the crape myrtle, and I'm sure you'll do some creative renovation.
Richard Chu09-Feb-2025 04:11
Hopefully everything will be fine after the disturbance.

Interesting how the city doesn't know which homes do or don't have lead pipes. It's very good that you didn't, but very disturbing that they have torn up your yard like this. Hope your plants survive.

Hopfully you wont jave to contend with any more snow, until this is done.
Nick Paoni08-Feb-2025 23:30
Good news that the pipes are lead, bur what a mess to contend with. Probably best to keep Queenie away from the hole.
Kevin D Warren08-Feb-2025 22:14
Good for sure that you don't have lead pipes. At first look I thought perhaps Queenie had become rather ambitious at digging!
Mairéad08-Feb-2025 22:04
Oh dear - that does looks a mess.
But good to know you don't have lead pipes.
Don08-Feb-2025 21:46
From the thumbnail I thought this was an archaeological dig!

Nice news that you do not have lead pipes sounds like they will replace the galvanized pipe which can also go bad over time.
I think your tree will make it they are pretty hardy.

I am glad you were offered the program. Should be an improvement!
Ursula Miller08-Feb-2025 14:24
Well, Helen, I think it’s the same all over the world. I hope it won’t take too long in the end and your tree survives.
Danad08-Feb-2025 14:07
Everywhere the same story : We all know when they start but never when they end !

Too bad they couldn’t tell some how if it was lead before digging. Fingers crossed for your tree.
Carl Carbone08-Feb-2025 13:19
Ouch. Hope the tree survives!
Bill Miller08-Feb-2025 08:22
Oh, a lot of disturbance. I hope it gets put back in good order.
John Hamers08-Feb-2025 08:16
