Damascus Gate, Jerusalem

The Damascus Gate is one of the main Gates of the Old City of Jerusalem. In its current form, the gate was built in 1537 under the rule of Suleiman the Magnificent; however, a gate is known to have been located in the same spot since the Roman period.

We went to Israel and Jordan while we were posted to Ankara, from 1996 to 2000. We stayed with a diplomat friend in Tel Aviv and traveled by bus to Jerusalem. I remember the bus route we took had previously been subject to a terrorist attack and that it wasn’t the most worry-free vacation we ever had.

Making friends at PetSmart, too, posted earlier:

Great shot of this historic gate in Jerusalem. The place and the people look peaceful and calm in the photo, but there is always a tension beneath the surface when visiting Israel, starting with immigration clearance at the airport ...

a humming location...the crenellated walls speak of troubled times, and 5 centuries later the strife continues..

Such a beautiful peaceful looking image. It is so sad an attack can happen at anytime. V

A place full of history and source, still today, of so many tensions.

Nice shot of the gate. I was there in June 2000. 2 cruise stops. Don't know if I'll ever get around to converting those old photos. I'm glad I got to go there when things were calm. We were able to tour the whole country and see all the historic sights.

I have a similar photo in my film archives. But for some reason, I remember the area being a whole lot busier.

Because I was young & felt invincible, I didn't worry any of the times we traveled throughout Israel, despite terrorism being commonplace. Because there were bus bombings during 2 of our 4 visits, getting on a city bus to do anything in Tel Avi did kind of make me think twice. But not really worry. Bus bombings were just part of life in Israel back then. Travel between the cities didn't even make me think twice. We went by private car, but even that wasn't really totally "safe". One never knew what was going to happen or where. Ah, to be young and really stupid. You were right in having some concerns, No way would I travel to Israel now... Glad I got to see so much of this interesting country back when we did. My husband had work there & I got to go along each time to extend things into a vacation and also to do some work myself,

I look forward to seeing more of your historic photos.
