Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong

Located on the Kowloon Peninsula, Sham Shui Po is one of the densest and most vibrant neighborhoods in Hong Kong.

****

I finally found my print pictures of all the foreign travel we did while posted with the State Department to Yokohama/Tokyo (1991-95) and our first tour in Turkey (1996-2000), including to Hong Kong, China, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Israel, Jordan and Germany. Since we can't really do any vacation travel these days, it's a nice trip down memory lane to revisit all those places we saw so long ago.

You have hit upon the best reason to still make prints of your most important memories. Feel sorry for folks that only shoot with their cell phones when the time comes years later to visit those places in your imagination.

A good memory of the times. Urban renewal (still on-going) has changed things a bit, with this now becoming somewhat a more upscale, yuppy artisan area with many streets being foot traffic only. The old and new now mix. Originally, it was one of the oldest, working-class areas in Hong Kong and suffered from severe urban blight. If taken before 2000, your photo shows how things were before urban renewal was started. If one was willing to get off the normal tourist path, this has always been a great place to spend the day taking everything in... even back in the 80's. It's a great place to explore on foot. Today, it seems to have something for everyone. Since I haven't been back since the pandemic hit, I have no idea what the current situation is today with immigrants from mainland China. That once was what gave the area the area its vib. I like how you composed this scene. Well shot.
