I thought the description of this native Australian bird on a Maryland zoo website was interesting: “Tawny frogmouths are odd birds whose looks are owl-like and whose mouths are frog-like (hence the name).” They also say the birds perch in trees in the daytime and hunt at night and that frogmouths play a vital role in their ecosystems, including agricultural areas, by helping to control populations of locusts, grasshoppers, mice and the devastating Christmas beetle that ravages eucalyptus trees.
We visited Healesville back in the ’80s as well as when we returned for vacation in 2002. Really a great place to stroll through with its collection of native Australian animals and birds.
