Fitting in with the locals

We really liked our Akubra hats, but they both disappeared on one of our many moves around the world.

When I first started doing a degree at the Australian National University, I had a hard time even understanding the lecturers due to Aussie accents and language differences. My linguistics professor used to make me pronounce things so the rest of the class could compare my speech and vocabulary with their own. But one of our frequent clients at the vet clinic where I worked thought for two years that I was Australian and was surprised to hear I wasn’t. Maybe I became more of a local than I had realized.

Yes, you both looked the part! Akubra hats sure are damned awkward to travel with, so easily misplaced at airports, etc.

My cousin moved to NC for a while and came back with an accent so it could be that you picked one up. That is such a sweet photo of you both. V

I love seeing older photos, and this is simply wonderful. How interesting that you picked up the Aussie accent; I was told I had also picked it up during the time we lived there, but as far as I was concerned, I couldn't hear it! V

You two were a really cute couple!!! Interesting story about how you were used to teach the Aussies about the differences between the American and Australian way of speaking. Funny story about your later hanging on to an acquired Australian accent. Love the hats. I have one very similar that I got in Australia. It's wonderful protection from the sun.

looks as if you just came back from a cattle station, and seem content and relaxed...a fine old shot, and a subtle peek at your garden in the window..
