Planet Word: ‘Speaking Willow’

Pictured is a 2020 sculpture by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer outside the museum. According to the sign: “Symbolizing life, wisdom, and organic growth, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s interactive sculpture 'Speaking Willow' celebrates the world’s interrelated linguistic diversity. Each motion-activated bell-shaped speaker has been programmed with a different language recording, representing the native tongues of over 99% of the planet’s population.”

We finally paid a visit to Planet Word, a new museum in DC that focuses on language. You might not think such an unusual museum would be too popular, but there were a lot of people there who seemed fascinated by the interactive displays. I loved it and definitely want to go back to spend more time there.

From Wiki: Planet Word is a language arts museum that opened in Washington, D.C., in October 2020. The museum is described as "The museum where language comes to life" and features exhibits dedicated to topics such as the history of the English language, how children learn words and how music and advertising use words. It is located in Franklin Square at the historic Franklin School, built in 1869.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by PBase are decidedly
unsharp.

That's very cool! I'll have to tell Tom and Winnie about this place. Tom was going to get a Masters in Linguistics when he decided it was going to be to hard to find a job in that area. V

A very nice location for this work of art and a great idea with the speakers and languages.
Nice sharp image and exposure.
