The long-awaited and mainly peaceful protest took place Friday night, with both opponents and defenders of the Emancipation Memorial as well as residents of Capitol Hill in attendance. There’s a movement afoot to either move the statue to a museum or to alter it. Nothing has yet been decided, and Lincoln and the freed slave are still standing, albeit surrounded by a high fence and concrete barriers.
One of my neighbors said it's typical of Capitol Hill culture that "we turned a riot into a panel discussion."
There’s an excellent report on the demonstration in The Wall Street Journal, written by another of my neighbors, but you need a subscription to be able to view it. If anybody wants a .pdf of it, let me know, and I’ll be happy to send it.
Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.
