The National Christmas Tree, situated behind the White House, was reportedly damaged when some man decided to climb it on Friday. As a result, the lights have been shut off since then for repairs, which have been “complicated” by the ongoing government shutdown, and the enclosure is closed to the public, also because of Trump’s partial shutdown of the government. The area is maintained by the US Park Service, which is one of the agencies that are now shuttered, so park rangers have been furloughed.
Update: A private park foundation funded the restoration of the lights on Monday, but people still are prohibited from entering the tree area.
