I’ll be getting back to the egrets in a bit, but in the meantime we saw a number of other things, including butterflies, turtles and more dragonflies. lotuses and water lilies.

This is the first time I can remember ever photographing a butterfly! I should have said the first in the wild since I have taken some pictures in a butterfly pavilion, but they were pretty much sitting targets there.

I had planned to end this gallery, but we went back to the 700-acre Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens in Washington, D.C., to take another stab at photographing one of the resident herons. We did see one, but once again it was quite far away and in the shadows so I don’t think we got many usable shots of it. However, there was a group of four Great Egrets who stuck around for quite a while and were happy to let us photograph them, unfortunately mainly from quite a distance.
