This is Mount Nemrut (Nemrut Dağı), a 2,134-meter-high (7,001 feet) mountain in Adıyaman Province in southeastern Turkey, at the summit of which are a number of large statues erected around what is assumed to be a royal tomb from the first century B.C. In 62 B.C. King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene built a tomb-sanctuary that included huge statues (8-9 meters, or 26-30 feet) of himself, two lions, two eagles and various gods.

The heads have broken off the sculptures and are scattered around the site, such as this one of Apollo. Tim is 6 feet tall, so you can imagine how large the statues originally were.

We took several trips around Turkey’s East and Southeast, and these scanned print pictures are not arranged in chronological order (in case any Turkish friends are wondering what kind of a crazy route we took!).
