Nemrut statue heads

This is Mount Nemrut (Nemrut Dağı), a 2,134-meter-high (7,001 feet) mountain in Adıyaman Province in southeastern Turkey, at the summit of which are a number of large statues erected around what is assumed to be a royal tomb from the first century B.C. In 62 B.C. King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene built a tomb-sanctuary that included huge statues (8-9 meters, or 26-30 feet) of himself, two lions, two eagles and various gods. The heads have broken off the sculptures and are scattered around the site, such as these of Heracles, Apollo and a Persian eagle god.

We took several trips around Turkey’s East and Southeast, and these scanned print pictures are not arranged in any kind of chronological order (in case any Turks are wondering what kind of a crazy route we took!).
