The 'indirect' route

Tim was on a 22-hour flight to Oman when he took this picture, on the last leg from Doha to Muscat. Because of the Saudi-led embargo on Qatar, supported by the United Arab Emirates and several other Arab and Gulf countries, the Qatar Airways plane had to avoid Saudi and UAE airspace for what is normally a pretty straight shot and quick flight, apparently having to enter Iranian airspace to get to its destination.

The flight from Washington to Doha took longer than usual as well, having to fly over eastern Turkey and much of Iran to avoid Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

Oh, my, do I remember that map. Usually returning to the UAE for another 10 1/2 month stint.

That is an unusual sight and quite unsettling. V

I agree with globalgadabout. Hope Tim is OK.

the Saudis criticizing Qatar's support of terrorism seems like the pot calling the kettle black...

Wow, that really is a convoluted course. Especially when you look at the map and can visualize the straight shot between the two.

About the same as my last flight to Maui!

Another fascinating shot - talk about convoluted. A 22 hour flight sounds punishing.
