'Chainsaw carving'

Bears are big in this part of the country, in addition to being numerous in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We saw this “chainsaw carving” operation on the main road in Wears Valley. Not a great capture as taken from a moving car, but I just found this kind of “woodart” interesting.

Mountain Dan was famous in this area for performing at various events. I'm pretty pleased with myself for being able to find his picture among my poorly documented galleries here on pbase - only took me three gallery tries!http://www.pbase.com/isabel95/image/143590768

Some of these artists are very talented. Last fall we saw some artists at a fair and their work was outstanding. There is a wood carver not too far from where we life, who specializes in turning live trees into sculptures. Most of the trees he uses were set for being cut down, but the owners wanted to keep its memory alive.
