'Giraffe Fortune,' detail

We found this work of art outside the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (the equivalent of their embassy, except the US doesn’t recognize Taiwan as a country) way up in Northwest Washington. The plaque reads:

“In Giraffe Fortune, the giraffe’s neck is extremely long, resembling a bamboo stalk. In Taiwanese culture, bamboo has many symbolic meanings, among them strength and commitment to continuous growth. The sculpture not only symbolizes the idea of strength and commitment to grow and achieve one’s dreams, but specifically Hung Yi’s lofty ambitions.”

I’ve decided to consolidate all my pictures of these sculptures in a mini-gallery because there are just too many now, plus we found two more of them over the weekend.

a cheerful illustration of a serious theme....surely Taiwan should be recognized as a country...perhaps a future, more enlightened administration will realize that..
