Many large stores and supermarkets here have a “family only” cashier, which means that only women, women with their families or men accompanying their wives can use them. Men not accompanied by a woman are definitely prohibited. They afford a measure of privacy, especially to women not accompanied by anybody. They also have regular cashiers where the general public can pay, including women if they so desire.
This, BTW, is one of my favorite stores in Riyadh, a sort of hardware/home furnishing/kitchenware/garden and such place. I can spend hours there and always find things to buy that I didn’t know I needed. They also carry a lot of American products, which is quite nice.
