Chefchaouen (roughly pronounced shef-sha-wen) is Morocco’s “blue city” and my favorite place in the entire country. We had asked Rostom, our driver, what was so special about it before we arrived, and he said, “I can’t explain it; you simply have to experience it,” and that we did. It’s located in northwest Morocco, in the Rif Mountains, just inland of Tangier, with a somewhat small but very hilly medina that is almost entirely blue. The people were gracious and the ambience marvelous. I am dying to go back there for more. The preponderance of blue is said to have originated with the Jewish inhabitants of the town. That may be true, but I think it’s now carried on by the current residents because it’s beautiful and also a tourist draw.
These were the steps to our accommodation, Dar Meziana, a lovely place with a very slow Internet ;-).
