I had seen a picture of this scene while in Fes, and couldn’t wait to see it for myself, mainly because I couldn’t believe it was for real. These goats are dining on an argan tree, the fruit of which is famous for its cosmetic and curative qualities (as well as for its edible oil). The goats actually climb up in the tree and eat all day long if allowed, although sometimes when a tourist bus is coming, the goatherds put them up in the branches for pictures if they happen to be eating elsewhere. The herders told us they were soon going to move them to another tree and let this one rejuvenate itself for a while since the goats had pretty well eaten all the leaves. This was located just outside of Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast.
