Land of gourmet

We get a lot of imported food in Riyadh, from fine cheeses from France and lamb and beef from Australia and New Zealand to American “specialties” like pure pack pumpkin, fresh cranberries and horseradish, and even gourmet pasta from Italy, of which there was a colorful abundance in this supermarket. Basically we get things from all over the world, although one does have to pay for it. I once walked into a store in Centria Mall that must have had over 100 kinds of Italian olive oil. I bought some extra virgin olive oil with the producer’s name on it, but hate to say how much it cost.

Another picture posted today showing just what an oil-rich country this is:

Astonishing array of foods it seems, but at a cost. Love your excellent shot of the colourful pasta. V

There is a franchise here that specializes in olive oil and vinegar. I bought some premium olive oil that I had some difficulty choosing because there were so many from which to choose. Turned out I didn't like it at all, but much prefer the cheap plebeian Bertolli I get in the supermarket.

Again not what I would expect to find there.... food-wise you don't have to really miss what you're used to from back home. Just wondering: does Saudi Arabia have its own kitchen/specialties?

colourful and somehow lively display...good balance of rotini and penne as well...pasta is so versatile...ex-pats must be a captive audience there, and so reliable customers for expensive imported goods...
