We took a drive south from Muscat to visit some friends from Riyadh who were staying at a huge resort complex called Shangri-La, coincidentally also a recommended tourist attraction. It was amazing how drastically the landscape changed in a few miles – the mountains were suddenly gold in color and with a very unusual texture. This was a little bay near the resort; at right is what the mountains in this area looked like.
