Hidden Gem: The Palatial Szabó Ervin Public Library

This is the former Wenckheim Palace, a Neo-Baroque and Rococo palace built in 1887 and said to be the most beautiful such building in Budapest. It was designed for the wealthy industrialist Count Frigyes Wenckheim (1842-1912) by architect Artur Meining and with wrought-iron gates by Gyula Jungfer. It's a hidden gem, not really seen by tourists as you have to be a library member to enter.

I had been waiting a long time to have the opportunity to visit and take photographs, which requires the permission of the director. Our housekeeper, Ági, and I had a wonderful day out when the electricity was recently cut from the house for six hours, and we visited the library, among other places I had been wanting to see.

Please note that this gallery contains images from two visits to the library (arranged chronologically), with some new rooms photographed during the second visit as well as some new elements of previously captured rooms.

This is some information on the palace building and rooms from the library's site: http://www.fszek.hu/english/our_libraries/central_library/the_neo-baroque_palace/?article_hid=7054
