Located in Gutzon Borglum's Studio, this model (and others) were hung from the Mountain while the Mountain was being carved so the workers could reference what the finished product was supposed to look like. One inch on the model equals one foot on the mountain.
In the background is Gutzon Borglum's model of what the completed sculpture of Mount Rushmore was supposed to look like. But World War II and Gutzon Borglum's death (1941) intervened. Gutzon Borglum's son, Lincoln, finished the sculpture as you see it today.
