20130516 109 SERIES - Great Horned Owlet.jpg

Ottawa West

OK, so I said I had posted my last GH Owl image; however, I lied. I went through some of my many, previously not processed images, and decided to post a few more series. Presently I'm posting two images to better illustrate how high up the Owls nest was.

Top Image: Little Brother, left by himself ventured off the nest and on to one of the top limbs some sixty feet above the ground.

Little Brother, on finally leaving the nest, was seen to fly to a nearby tree where he perched for a while and then flew back to the nest tree, landing on a lower branch as shown. He apparently perched there overnight before finally flying to another tree. Unlike his Big Sister, Little Brother apparently never landed on the ground, but rather he flew up to where Mom was and remained up high for the next several days whilst Big Sister remained close by, but much lower. It seemed that she may have slightly injured one of her wings.

It's ok - I will never get bored of owl shots, particularly yours. The top one, surrounded so nicely by the sea of green leaves is especially compelling.

Great to see the long view of where these owlets were. A good end to a great story - weren't we fortunate to witness it.

Great job Hank to put the nest in perspective. Imagine the view from the owlet's vantage point. ;)
