My second posting of the Black-backed Woodpecker that seems to have taken up residence in a recently burned area of forest within the city limits. These Woodpeckers, rather than making large holes in the trees, peel off large areas of bark to uncover insect larvae. This probably explains why they seem to seek out areas of burned forest where the bark may peel off easier. Like in this image, there was extensive evidence of bare patches on the tree trunks throughout the burned area indicative of the Woodpeckers having been hard at work.
