A friend and I were out shooting some Buffleheads and Scaup that were swimming in the open waters near a creek outlet into the Ottawa River. They were considerable distance from shore; hence, after taking a few quick shots we decided to try our luck elsewhere. All of a sudden my friend spotted this Cooper's Hawk just sitting on a large rock less than 9 meters (30 feet) from us. It was concentrating on a female Mallard swimming not far away. It looked at us, then returned its attention back to the Mallard who seemed unaware of the Hawk's presence. We managed some full-frame shots before some crows came along and caused the Hawk to fly off without its intended supper.
