The family spent many weekends at the railway cottage and my father surveyed the “Viking site” behind the cottage on Gauber High Pasture (with the help of his sons).
I participated in the excavation of this site, led by Alan King, in 1974. Four Anglian coins were found, dating to the 860s, immediately prior to the Viking settlement.
Three buildings set around a farmyard were excavated.
