Four Crosses

Rankin Inlet, NU

I came across this "grave cache" while exploring the area around Rankin Inlet, NU. Taken at about 11:00 p.m. as the sun was setting.

Hello, and thanks for your comments. The "meaning" of the Four Crosses is very simple. In the far North, it is customary for the inhabitants to place the dead in a "grave cache" since it's impossible to bury them. As I explored the area one day on a quad, I came across this cache of four people. It was a solemn and striking scene as the sun was setting that day. The tundra was in full bloom, and the setting was as if to say, "You are gone, but not forgotten." I was honoured to be able to have taken the photo.
