On the 10 September 2005 "Ocean Safari" to Massachusetts Bay, Stellwagen Bank and the Atlantic east of Cape Cod, sponsored by the Plymouth Marine Mammal Research Center, we found the female Humpback "Fulcrum" thrashing and spinning violently in an attempt to free herself from fishing gear wrapped around her lower body. We waited two hours for a rescue crew from the Center for Coastal Studies to arrive, during which time Fulcrum was joined by a second Humpback. We left when the rescue boat arrived, but later learned that Fulcrum had been uncooperative and the rescue crew failed to disentangle her. However, later that year, Fulcrum was spotted without any fishing gear, so apparently she was able to free herself.
