This is what I had intended on shooting last night had my remote shutter release worked. I asked around this morning about any camera shops nearby. Low and behold, there were a few! I called them and found out that they did not have any remote shutter releases for Canon. Luckily I had my electronics kit with me (don't ask, I know I am camping) so I ripped the unit apart and had to remove about 3" of cable that was causing the shutter to trip. After I re-soldered the wires back in, I was good to go. I wish I'd gone for a slightly longer shot now as this is the last night of the weekend that I will be able to get this kind of shot (the campground will fill in tomorrow).
As you can see, I didn't quite have the camera centered on Polaris. It wasn't easy even getting Polaris into view as I was kneeling (later sitting) on the ground with my tripod on its low setting. Live view comes in handy, but you still have to estimate dead center.
