HAYNES DESCRIPTION:
The fourth generation of A40, introduced by BMC in 1958 was a radical departure from previous models. The estate car like body was styled by Pininfarina and fitted with the A35's 'A' Series 948cc engine. In 1959 a true estate version was announced as the 'countryman'. In 1961 the MkII version appeared with a 3.5” longer wheelbase, but the most obvious external difference was the new seven bar horizontal grille in place of the old nine bar 'wavy' mesh grille. The MarkII was further updated in 1963 with fitting of 1098cc engine (which it shared with the Morris Minor 1000) and continued in production until 1967. A40's were raced and rallied with some success until the late 1950's & early 1960's and are popular rally classic cars to this day.
