The first Cabot Trail was built in 1932. When Cape Breton National Highland Park was created in 1936 it was determined that the steep bone jarring road was not up to national park standards and rebuilding began immediately. It took four years to rebuild the old road. However, it was not until many years later in 1958 that the actual paving of the road began.
